Tasting Note:

This may come from the same commune as La Viaillère, but the wines it produces could not be more different. A much less aromatic and fruit-driven wine, this offers something earthier, deeper and more muscular. As robust and intense as the structure is, the velvety quality of the fruit gives such textural allure. The tannins are clear and present, but with a little time and aeration, the many layers of this statuesque Côte Rôtie start to peel back. Deep dark bramble and cassis fruit grounded by notes of undergrowth and pepper, as well as an underlying smoky spice touch. A baritone of a Côte Rôtie, an impressive and accomplished one at that, for despite the big structure and solidity there are no harsh edges here and the flavours fan out beautifully across the long finish. Grandes Places is a fabulous single vineyard in the Verenay commune planted with 75-year-old ‘Serrine’ vines, which is the traditional Syrah of Ampuis. The wine is aged for 24 months in 30% new oak and is bottled without filtration.
