Clusel Roch, Côte Rôtie, Les Grandes Places, 2014

2014

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Clusel Roch, Côte Rôtie, Les Grandes Places, 2014

A great Grandes Places, a vineyard that seems tailor-made for this vintage. The vineyard's complexity comes shining through in this 2014, whilst the open fruitiness of the vintage softens this cuvées typical austerity in youth. Elegant but gripping and intense. Brilliant, haunting flavours of cool, crunchy, red berry fruit with notes of cherry, damson, herb and salt. Bright, focused and energetic but with a great deal of charm, too. Grandes Places is a fabulous, single vineyard in the Verenay commune planted with 75-year-old ‘Serrine’ vines, which is the traditional Syrah of Ampuis. The wine is aged for 24 months in 30% new oak and is bottled without filtration.

Dark purple. Highly expressive blackberry, potpourri and licorice aromas show outstanding clarity and minerally lift. Palate-staining, expansive dark berry, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors are firmed by a spine of juicy minerality that adds back-end cut. Gains energy on the impressively persistent finish, which repeats the dark berry quality and leaves a vibrant echo of minerality behind.

Clusel Roch

Clusel Roch

This small artisanal Domaine, run by Brigitte Roch, Gilbert Clusel and their son Guillaume, only employs organic methods to work its vineyards and for some time have consistently had some of the lowest yields in the region. Such low yields and excellent vineyard sites help to produce excellent wines that are made in a gentle, pure and refined style. There is little new oak; depending on the vintage a large proportion of whole bunches may be included in fermentations and extractions are soft resulting in elegant, refined and characterful Côte Rôtie that age seamlessly. The standard cuvée is aged in one- and two-year-old barriques for a year, whilst wine from the old vines of Les Grandes Places require ageing in a proportion of new oak barriques, rarely more than 30-40%.
