Cornas, Les Billes Noires, 2015

Tasting Note:

Intense, ripe but vivid flavours. Tighter-knit than the Brise Cailloux, gripping and powerful but fine-grained. Notes of black cherry, cherry stone, minerals, salts and balsamic, with hints of fruit liqueur. From some of Mathieu's highest vineyards including Arlettes and parts of les eygats, at 370 metres altitude, the name Billes Noires or ‘Black Marbles’ refers to the consistently tiny grapes that this single vineyard produces. They are the estate’s highest vines, the soils here are shallow, very well drained and yields are extremely low. Aged in used oak barriques.
