Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Jean Paul Versino, Châteauneuf du Pape, Cuvée Felix, 2000

Harvested at 15º but with all of the body and richness to balance. Powerful and impressive, this has great stature, with great savoury complexity, firm tannic structure, wonderfully ripe wild cherry and bramble fruit, dark chocolate, and a wonderful herbal and mineral lift on the finish.

13.5%
93/100
Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

Deep red-ruby. Superripe, brooding nose of roasted red fruits, garrigue herbs, espresso, leather and nuts. Dense and generous in the mouth, with superb breadth of flavor but also excellent grip for such a ripe wine. This shows wonderful subtle intensity and incipient complexity. Finishes very long, firm and suave, with the fine tannins reaching the front teeth. Compelling Chateauneuf with the balance to age gracefully.

Jean Paul Versino

Jean Paul Versino

Also known as Bois du Boursan, this Domaine has an energetic young winemaker in Jean-Paul Versino who speaks with a contagious enthusiasm about his work. Gifted with some old Grenache and Mourvedre vines (between 50 and 100 years old!) he crafts a deep, damson and spice-packed Châteauneuf. The yields are low (28-30 hl/ha) and the winemaking is traditional. Whole bunch fermantation is employed, only wild yeasts are used and C02 is largely used in place of sulphur during ageing in large old oak wooden foudres. His vast, concentrated premier blend, Cuvée Felix, receives further maturation in two-year-old 225 litre barriques and contains usually up to 25% of old vine Mourvedre. The wines are intense thanks to the low yields , show bags of complex spice character but also boast wonderfully vivid fruit.
