Domaine Font Caude

Although the Languedoc is now justifiably established as a region rich in well-made, characterful and value for money wines, they are rarely perceived as anything more. However, the last decade has seen the advent of some boutique wineries which produce minute quantities of first class wine. In 1991, Alain Chabanon, disenchanted after many years running a co-operative, set up his own Domaine just outside Montpeyroux. The vineyards, which are planted with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Merlot, amount to 18 hectares of land – a paltry sum compared to the vast holdings of the average vinous Languedoc enterprise. The top Cuvée, the sublime L’Esprit de Font Caude, is an unfiltered wine made from the cream of the Estates’ vines that rarely exceed yields of 18 hl/ha, this often requires at least six years bottle age before consumption.
