Solaia 2011

New release - Solaia 2011

The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, but it is Piero Antinori who can take the credit for establishing a worldwide reputation for their wines, in particular, his DOCG-defying Tignanello and Solaia. Piero, as director of the business, is joined by his three daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, who together have consolidated the company's position as one of the leading Italian wine producers.

Solaia is very much Antinori’s flagship brand and one of the leading ‘super Tuscans’ along with Masseto, Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The vineyards are situated between the Greve and Pesa valleys in the heart of Chianti Classico, situated at an altitude of between 350-400m. The soil is a marl base mixed with shale and chalk.

Paraphrasing from the estate’s fiche technique (attached), the preceding winter was cold and snowy. The spring was extremely mild and early which resulted in bud burst a full 10 days earlier than average. May and June were clement and dry. July started with a cool spell which slowed vine development and brought the cycle back into line. By mid-August high temperatures returned to Tuscany and this period of heat lasted well into September. While daytime temperatures remained high throughout September, crucially, the night time temperatures dropped as they approached the harvest, which completed the ripening process and helping to retain freshness.

The Solaia 2011 hasn’t been critically reviewed yet. Please find the estate’s tasting note below:

Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Cabernet Franc 5%, Sangiovese 20%
‘An intense ruby red in color, at times impenetrably so, the 2011 Solaia shows intensely warm aromas which reflect the climate of the season while maintaining a delicate freshness as well. On the palate, the ripe red fruit and the spices, along with deep and floral notes, define the wine’s complex structure. The palate is succulent, rich, enveloping, and sweet thanks to the presence of dense, supple, and rounded tannins. The vibrant acidity contributes to the excellent expressiveness of the flavors and to a highly pleasurable, long, and persistent finish and aftertaste’.
