South Africa

Grape Variety:

Schist, Syrah, Swartland, 2017

Tasting Note:

Sourced from one vineyard on the Mullineux’s Roundstone Farm on the Kasteelberg, where the soils are stony shale and schist based, producing Syrahs of beautiful richness and concentration. Fermented with whole bunches in open top 500L barrels and kept on the skins for 4 weeks. Just one punch down per day esnures soft, gentle extractions, followed by a 12 months aging in 500L oak, 25% new, then a further 9 months in 2nd fill oak foudre and finally 9 months in bottle before release. Deep, scented, dark fruit with beautiful tannins and depth of fruit – Schist is routinely the most structured of the Mullineux Syrahs in youth, but also potentially the most ageworthy – comfortably 15-25 years. The 2017 is a knockout.
