Mullineux

Mullineux is certainly one of the current "superstar" producers in South Africa. Chris and Andrea Mullineux have won about as many plaudits as it is possible to do so with their sensational range of terroir driven Swartland wines. Their strength lies in their wonderful mineral-inflected Syrahs, although the wider range of Chenin Blanc, Clairette, Viognier and Grenache Blanc is also instilled with the same precision and aromatic expressiveness. Winemaking is "hands-off", paying particular attention to extraction levels and long macerations to ensure that tannins are as soft and round and possible. Fermentation is natural and spontaneous and all of the wines spend time in barrel with minimal racking before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. These are some of the most sumptuous and stylish wines around. Then there's Leeu Passant - the Franschhoek project of the Mullineuxs in conjunction with Analjit Singh. Where the Mullineux wines are concerned with Swartland's unique terroirs, the Leeu wines are multi-regional bottlings inspired by the classic age-worthy Cape wines of the 1960s. The 2015s are the maiden releases and in both style and packaging pay homage to worthy wines of yore. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Cinsault leased in various parts of the Cape all go in to the dry red, complimenting a complex Chardonnay from vines grown entirely in Stellenbosch.
