Tasting Note:

One of the great modern-day South African Syrahs, Ava 2019 comes from a pure schist, 21 year old site in the Swartland. A labour of love, in Donovan’s words, he says that it is the “extremities of this site that make the wine.” Painfully low yields of 670kg from 2.4HA of vineyard would have most accountants scratching their head, but “when you taste the wine it all makes sense.” Where the 2018 was centred around beautifully ripe, classy fruit, the 2019 is a more savoury offering, unfurling with complex notes of Rooibos tea and red currant, angostura bitters, liquorice, blood orange and black cherry. Layered with sweet velvety tannins and a sense of inner energy, this is the finest Ava we have tasted to date. Aged entirely in used barriques and bottled in January 2020 at 13.5% ABV. A total of 1,700bts were produced.
