Thief in the Night, Grenache, 2017

  Savage Wines

Thief in the Night, Grenache

Predominantly 42 year old Grenache with a little Syrah and Cinsault co-fermented. Sourced from the high altitude Soldaart vineyard in Piekenierskloof north of the Swartland in the Olifants River region and shared with Eben Sadie. As of 2018 the components will be fermented separately. 2017 is the first vintage, before then it was blended in to Savage Red and Follow the Line. Going forward production will be just one foudre but luckily in 2017 Duncan bottled just under 7,000 bottles. Lovely red fruit texture with more tannins and freshness coming from the 70% whole bunch fermentation, but the profile is still one of polished silky red fruit red cherry and scented strawberries. Hints of spice and damson on the finish with a gently gripping structure adds an extra dimension to the wine and sets this excellent debut on course for five to ten years of graceful aging. Such quality at this price is remarkable, happily the 2017 can be enjoyed with free abandon!

About Savage Wines

Duncan Savage is a man about (Cape) town with contacts all over the Western Cape. After fifteen years making the wine at the well-regarded Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan established and moved in to his own urban cellar in time to produce vintage 2017. His first wines; Savage Red and Savage White are still the mainstay of his production, but his own cellar has enabled him to fine tune the details and really make the wines in the way that he wants. In an effort to focus more on regionality and drill down in to the purity and elegance of individual site, he has expanded with a range of creatively labelled single vineyard wines which are rapidly gaining praise as some of the best in South Africa. Quantities are still tiny but Duncan’s style is one of purity and finesse, opting for larger neutral barrels and top-quality foudres. He has ambitious plans for the future as he seeks to move the whites in to concrete eggs for fermentation and separate out the different components in the reds to maximise control and precision, in a natural way, without too much interference. Duncan believes that wine is about controlling the finest details and constant tweaking to ensure perfection from the start. “My background as a white winemaker made me believe that red wines would just come together with time whatever happened. We’ve realised that isn’t the case. With our own winery now we can be absolutely perfect from start to finish, with the strictest selections and skin contact. We pick on the earlier side to keep alcohols moderate and favour aerated pump overs rather than punch downs to ensure we only draw out the finest tannin.” 2017 is without doubt Duncan’s best vintage yet and now that the winery aspect is in hand, his dream is to secure fruit contracts long-term and focus more on isolating and expressing them as choice parcels of exceptional old-vine material.

Appellation: Western Cape

The Western Cape encompasses all of the major wine regions of South Africa. Within this classification is the Cape Winelands, itself made up of the most prominent regions, namely Stellenbosch, Constantia, Franschoek, Paarl, Robertson and Wellington.

Grape Blend: Grenache | Syrah | Cinsault

A classic red blend that positively screams "Rhône" but that is also utilised effectively in other parts of the world, notably in South Africa's Western Cape.
