    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Pulpy, citrus-rich fruits, and a more delicate stony feel that gives it a more mineral, less fruity and less nervy feel this year. Beautifully composed, it is succulent and dry and mineral with a finessed air about it. The Skaliekop (Shale-Hill) vines were planted in 1985 in very shallow shale soils in the Paardeberg, an anomaly in this granite-rich region. A small tractor road divides the Plat’bos and Skaliekop vineyards. The wines of the different pickings were aged separately, before blending and then bottling at the end of the year.

The 2023 Chenin Blanc Skaliekop comes from bush vines planted in 1985 on shale soils. It has an introverted nose at first, opening with well-defined oyster shell, linseed oil and light pine scents. The elegantly styled palate is where the action is: superb delineation and focus, a keen line of acidity and a dash of ginger on the finish. Superb.
