    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Sourced from a 23 year old single vineyard in the Paardeberg on deep decomposed Granite. Fermented with whole bunches in open top 500L barrels and kept on the skins for 4 weeks. Just one punch down per day ensures soft, gentle extractions, followed by a 12 months aging in 500L oak, 25% new, then a further 9 months in 2nd fill oak foudre and finally 9 months in bottle before release. The Granite Syrah is always the most perfumed and elegant of the Syrahs, with a crisp, refreshing acidity, violet scented with blackberries, cranberries and sappy black fruit. Tense with crisp tannins. Outstanding. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The 2017 Granite Syrah needs a little encouragement from the glass to reveal scents of blackberry, raspberry coulis, fennel and gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is a satisfying salinity throughout this Syrah, and a pleasing brightness on the finish. Excellent winemaking here, and I suspect this will age with style.
