Castro Candaz, A Boca do Demo, Ribeira Sacra, 2017

2017

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Castro Candaz, A Boca do Demo, Ribeira Sacra, 2017

A Boca do Demo hails from a 0.8HA single plot within the wider Finca and is the product of one large foudre. Compared to the fruitier, more youthful Finca El Curvado, A Boca do Demo is deeper and more profound, with fine violet, black pepper and stony notes reminiscent of the finest Northern Rhone Syrahs. Although initially more structured than Finca El Curvado, the tannins are more sophisticated, being ripe and velvety, supporting layers of lithe, detailed ruby-violet fruit, finishing on graphite and herbs. Treated like a fine Burgundy in a wide bowled glass, it grows in stature and complexity over time – offering a very high quality drinking experience at a price that harks back to the old days of Burgundy and the Northern Rhone. 2017 was a warm, dry year. Fermented with 100% whole bunches and kept on the skins for approximately 30 days with no punch downs. In typically self-effacing fashion Raul Perez says that “these wines are the result of truly heroic viticulture. I just walk them to the finish line.” La Chantada is a cooler sub-zone of Ribeira Sacra where the Sil River widens and the soils are based on granite rather than schist, as seen in the warmer and more famous Amandi and Val do Bibei sub-zones.

Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Saturated, bright-hued garnet. Spice- and earth-tinged cherry and black raspberry aromas pick up suave floral and succulent herb nuances with air. Concentrated red and dark fruit preserve and licorice flavors are energized by smoky mineral and exotic spice notes. Blends depth and energy with a sure hand and finishes very long, smoky and gently chewy, with dusty tannins adding final grip.

Castro Candaz

Castro Candaz

Castro Candaz is a new Ribeira Sacra project, established as a joint-venture between Bierzo legend Raúl Pérez and top Rias Baixas producer Rodrigo Méndez. In fact, they have a long history of working together, with impressive results. For in 2005, they established the now leading Rias Baixas estate Forjas del Salnés and it was there that Raul helped Méndez to refine his style and produce a range of elegant, high toned reds to compliment Mendez’s natural affinity with Albarino. In return, he helped Pérez to develop his famous “Sketch” label, now one of the most sought after whites in Spain. Happily, they have joined forces once more, this time in Ribeira Sacra, truly one of the most awe-inspiring regions in Europe. Pérez already has a foothold there in the warm, Amandi subzone via Guimaro, with whom he produces La Penitencia and El Pecado, so when it came to developing Castro Candaz, Pérez and Mendez were seeking a new expression of Ribeira Sacra. Together they scouted out the cooler, lesser-known La Chantada appellation, where the Sil River widens, and the soils have a higher proportion of granite over schist. These are beautifully detailed wines with an unerring freshness and precision reminiscent of top level Cote Rotie, offered at a snip of the price. Under the radar for now, this small project is nevertheless destined for greatness.
