Tasting Note:

The 2018 Las Gundinas is without doubt the best vintage we have tasted to date. More ferrous and mineral this year, where normally it exudes more chocolate and earth, the 2018 has a certain transparency of red fruit that is very welcome and not dissimilar to Pinot Noir or perhaps Sangiovese (with less tannin). Almost elemental, with an earthy red fruit richness - strawberries, damson and redcurrants in particular, but a prominent dry irony spice and tobacco speaks to a high level of complexity and savouriness not often associated with this cuvee. Superb. A south east facing vineyard planted on clay heavy soils at 450-500m. Its warmer exposition and flatter topography versus the other La Vizcaina wines tends to produce ripe, earthy, quite flashy wines - not so in 2018! Whole bunch fermented and kept on skins for 60-90 days before 12 months aging in used 225L barriques.
