This sparkling wine features bright citrus notes, cooking apples and elderflower on the nose, along with caressing, gentle lees and toasted elements. Crisp and tight on the palate with high acidity and a touch of salinity on the finish. Aeration leads to suggestions of red apple skin, barley and white peaches. 2012 sees a slightly higher dosage level than usual at around 11g/l to aid roundness and texture. The wine spent 36 months on the lees and further 6 months under cork prior to release.

About Gusbourne Estate

A new addition to the portfolio, Gusbourne Estate is now rightly considered amongst the very best in the burgeoning English Sparkling Wine world. This pretty estate in Appledore, Kent was bought in 2004 by Andrew Weeber with the sole aim of producing world-class sparkling wine. Supported by a small, dedicated team, precision winemaking, complete ownership of their vineyards and an eye for detail, Gusbourne has quickly earned a reputation for quality, and accolades from some of the industry’s leading critics to boot.

Appellation: England

English wine is revelling in unprecedented growth. As its reputation improves both domestically and abroad, more vineyards are being planted and existing ones grow older, offering the happy combination of scale and quality. Although situated at a perilously high latitude, the effects of global warming appear to be, at least in part, benefiting the English in their attempt to produce wine. While wine has been produced here for a long time, often using Germanic and other cool climate grape varieties, the industry really seems to have found its stride in the production of sparkling wine from the traditional Champagne varieties. Furthermore, the best sites in the south of England are grown on south-facing slopes with chalky soils, not unlike their French counterparts in Champagne, a mere stone throw across the channel.

Grape Type: Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most widely-grown and versatile of all white grape varieties. As a relatively neutral grape, it offers a near transparent map of winemaking style, climate and terroir. It is the ideal grape variety for Burgundy, where it serves to mirror the complex nuances of the myriad of terroirs found in this hallowed land. Chardonnay produces a variety of wines from the minerally and unoaked styles found in Chablis, the fatter nuttier examples in Meursault, to the tropical fruit-driven versions found in the New World. It is also the major grape variety in Champagne, where it produces lively floral wines, namely in the Côte de Blancs. It can be found throughout Europe and the New World thanks to its versatility. As a non-aromatic variety, it has an affinity with oak, whether new or used, French or American.
