Voyager Cabernet Merlot 2009 - 97/100 at 145 pounds per six bottles.
The Wizard of Oz.
There is undoubtedly something a little special about Margaret River. It is not surprising that it is commonly referred to as a viticulturalist’s paradise. Come harvest time, when Kangaroos can be a threat to tasty ripe grapes, pickers are often rounded up from one of the many local surf breaks. Cool ocean breezes bring a freshness to the wines, while the famous gravel croups that many of the best vineyards sit on lend the wines an air of aristocratic austerity seldom seen in reds from Australia's other winemaking regions.
Voyager Estate has long been a favourite of ours. Steve James and his team set about making honest, true wines that are designed to age with grace and provide long term drinking pleasure. The beauty of these wines is you could happily drink the 2009 today, or stick it in the cellar for a decade or more.
Their latest release, the Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot 2009 is a wine of multiple charms. At under £150 for a half dozen it represents pretty stunning value for money, particularly when one takes James Halliday’s recent evaluation into account. Awarding it 97/100 and naming it his Best Cabernet and Friends blend tasted in 2014.
"While the level of new oak is a feature on the bouquet, the depth, complexity and layers of dark fruits, cedar, black olive and graphite minerality is astounding, the mouthfeel further enhances the picture, with a seamless transition across the palate." James Halliday.
Full critical reviews can be found attached. We tasted a sample last week and found it superb with layers of mineral infused cabernet fruit, deep and long yet never heavy nor overbearing. With a few years' cellaring one suspects it is a bottle that wouldn’t take long to finish.
