Owner Brian Franklin planted the Apsley Gorge vineyard near the Douglas Apsley National Park north of Bicheno in 1988. Having spent a vintage with Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey Chambertin, he started to employ several Burgundian practices in the wine-making process such as natural vine-growing without herbicide use, minimal intervention winemaking, and bottling without fining or filtration. Brian has now succeeded in establishing this as one of Australia’s great Pinots.
The Island of Tasmania sitting off the south of Australia is home to numerous terroirs and climats. The most success found thus far, in a region that is yet to fully unlock its true potential, comes from plantings of Pinot Noir. Apsley Gorge exploit their land near the Douglas Apsley National park to great effect making one of Australias most exciting Pinot Noirs.
