Excellent freshness, with citrus tones, quite zesty with a hint of lime and plenty of herbaceous Sauvignon character on the nose. Good weight and a persistent finish. Very good.
Just a dozen kilometres south of Bordeaux, the remarkable architecture of Château Carbonnieux is one of the largest and oldest vineyards of the Graves wine region. With a unique terroir authenticated by a rich history dating back to the 1800s, Carbonnieux ranks among the original estates during the creation of the Pessac Léognan appellation. Winemaker, Philibert Perrin Yield uses traditional and environment-friendly practices in the vineyard and the cellar to produce his distinctive and complex wines. The wines are honest and well made and offer good value for money.
The region has one first growth, Château Haut-Brion, whilst other renowned Chateaux currently doing well are La Mission-Haut-Brion, Pape-Clément, Smith-Haut-Lafitte and Haut-Bailly. Soils are gravely and well-drained and the plantations are similar in proportion to those of the Médoc, consisting mostly of Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The region is also well known for its long-lived whites that can be varying blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon oaked or unoaked. The most lauded are Domaine de Chevalier, Haut-Brion, Pape-Clement, De Fieuzal, and Laville-Haut-Brion.
