The 100% Semillon Doisy Daene promises much on the nose with fine grapefruit and gently warmed lemon notes, but sadly on the day we tasted it the palate felt sluggish, warm and rather heavy. Sweet spice notes and barley sugar dominate the palate. On the basis of the nose this may well blossom, but our nod definitely goes to Vedrines in the battle of the Doisy’s.
Château Doisy-Daëne is Second Cru Classé winery located in Barsac within the Sauternes appellation. The estate has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924. For over eighty years three generations of vine growers have exercised talents to produce great sweet white wines : Georges (1924-1948), Pierre (1949-1999) and Denis since 2000. The vineyards are planted on soils that consist of red sand and clay with limestone with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc varietals. On average, the vines at Doisy-Daëne are 35 years of age. The wines are typically deep, rich and vibrant and usually sell out en primeur – an unusual feat amongst the estates of Sauternes.
It is a region on the other side of the Ciron from the even bigger and more famous Sauternes district. Wines produced within Barsac are also entitled to use the appellation Sauternes.
The wines are considered more elegant than those of Sauternes. Climens and Doisy-Daëne are some of the leading producers
