Closed, brooding and dense. Aeration reveals multi-layered flavours of oak spice, sweet liqueur fruits mixed with brighter red cherry touches, some oak spice and asian spice and a gentle earthiness underwritten by dense but velvety tannins. Ostensibly Grand Cru in its stature and power, this will need time in bottle
Drouhin-Laroze is a great domaine re-born. Set up in 1919 when Suzanne, the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Laroze, married Alexandre Drouhin. Her father’s Gevrey-Chambertin and her husband’s Chambolle-Musigny estates were united to form Drouhin-Laroze, a domaine that has been exploiting the Côte de Nuits’ best vineyards ever since. After sharing the winemaking with his father in 2000, Philippe Drouhin took full control of the vineyard and winery from the 2001 vintage, beginning the re-incarnation of this great Burgundian domaine. Now with the emergence of Philippe's son and daughter, who now take an active part in running the Domaine, the estate's future looks secured.
A 12.9 hectare vineyard in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits. Chambertin is one half of Le Chambertin, the other half being Chambertin Clos de Bèze which is slightly bigger at 15.4ha. Chambertin has always produced some of the most intense and serious red Burgundy there is and was purportedly drunk by Napoleon during his campaigns. Today it is still one of Burgundy's very greatest Grands Crus. The wines are more brooding and closed in their youth than those of Clos de Bèze and age extremely well. Among the arch exponents are Armand Rousseau, Leroy, Trapet, Rossignol-Trapet, Denis Mortet and Louis Remy.
