An incredible palate-awakener of a wine with huge depth and tension; a rapier like acidity compliments wonderful fruit blossom, acacia, jasmine, nectarine and honeysuckle fruit with notes of lemon zest and dry crushed stones. So long, fine-tuned and expansive, this shimmers with the brightness and beauty of a fine cut diamond.
Etienne Sauzet’s son-in-law, Gérard Boudot, makes the wine at this benchmark Burgundian Domaine and has been more recently assisted by talented winemaker Benoit Riffault, Gerard's son-in-law. A tasting with Gérard and Benoit is not just enjoyable but highly educational – each session is a virtual masterclass in terroir. Indeed, their knowledge of Puligny’s different vineyards is second to none. they resist the temptation to interfere with the wines too much after fermentation, and employs on average 30% new oak every year. The Grand Crus are, of course, impressive; even right down to Villages and Bourgogne level the wines display the finesse and grace of truly great Puligny.
Based entirely in the Puligny-Montrachet commune Chevalier-Montrachet is a 7 hectare Grand Cru lying directly above Montrachet. A steeper, stonier and chalkier vineyard than Montrachet that gives less rich wines. However after Le Montrachet, the wines of Chevalier are usually the next most sought after of the white Grand Cru. The wines have a disticnt taut, mineral character thanks to the poor stony soil, aswell as the requisite length and depth for a Grand Cru quality wine.
