Tight-packed minerally red fruits, finely perfumed, excellent power. Focused and vibrant, brilliantly vivid-yet-smooth fruit flavours of autumn hedgerow berry and deeper undergrowth touches; surprisingly suave tannins for a Bonnes-Mares without lacking anything, superbly balanced. The Domaine was estalished by Georges Roumier in 1924, who went on to instigate the practice of domaine bottling his family’s wines in 1945. Today the Domaine has been expanded to 11.8 hectares over 9 appellations and is run by Georges Roumier’s Grandson, Christophe. Christophe makes the wine as naturally as possible, vines are hand-tended, the wine undergoes a controlled fermentation with maceration before and after, and the wines rest sur lie in barriques for as long as possible, usually 16 to 18 months. The long slow ageing enables these wines to be bottled without filtration. 15-25% new oak is used for the village appellations whilst 40-50% is used for the 1ers and Grand Crus. The result is intense, noble red Burgundy.
A fabulous Grand Cru vineyard of 15 hectares situated predominantly in the commune of Chambolle-Musigny, with a tiny 1.5 ha overlapping into Morey-St-Denis. The wines are typically sturdy, mineral and muscular - Burgundies of great stature that are built to last. The anomaly would be wines that come from the Morey St Denis side bordering Clos de Tart, here they are powerful but considerably more floral, fruity and elegant than other Bonnes Mares, Bruno Clair's is an exquisite example. Ownership accross the whole vineyard area is spread over more than 30 proprietors, the largest being Domaine Comte de Vogüé. There are many fine producers of Bonnes Mares up and down the Côte de Nuits, the most notable based in Chambolle-Musigny itself are Mugnier, Roumier and Groffier.
