In our view the finest of the Hospices Cuvees by a distance, the Mazis Chambertin will be aged (in new barrels) and bottled for us by Domaine du Comte Liger Belair. On first approach the wine is clearly very fragrant charming and immediately seductive. The beauty of this wine, however, is that the initial wave of ripe fruit is amply supported by great complexity and a fine, beautifully-textured structure. Flavours of Alpine strawberry, red cherries and cherry blossom abound, this is gourmand and ripe yet sufficiently precise and extremely long.
The Hôtel-Dieu hospital was founded in Beaune in 1443 by the Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor under Burgundy's ruler Duke Philip the Good, as a solution to the great poverty and sickness created in the afternmath of the Hundred Years War. Out of the Hôtel-Dieu a group of carers formed called the Hospices de Beaune. Today the proceeds from their annual auction in November of young wines in barrel are entirely used for the modernisation of medical equipment in the new hospital, created in 1971, as well as other charitable projects in Beaune that provide care and shelter to the poor. The Hospices is proprietor of over 61 ha in some of Burgundy's most prestigious vineyards, donated over the years by benevolent winegrowers. They have their own vineyard and winemaking team, comprising 23 different growers, headed up by Roland Masse, formerly winemaker at Domaine Bertagna.
Mazis-Chambertin, also written Mazy-, comprises 12.59 ha and along with Latricières-Chambertin is considered to be one of the best Gevrey Grands Crus after Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. The wines can be very fine intense and powerful, they age well but are be more generous in their youth than either Chambertin and Clos de Bèze being less structured. Some of the more renowned producers are Dugat Py, Maume, Rousseau Esmonin and d'Auvenay.
