The result of seven “tries” through the vineyards and seven vinifications blended together, this is a wine of towering elegance, richness and force, sophisticated flavours of butter, stone, mineral, dried flower and acacia, silky but tense, too, long haunting flavours that resound around the empty glass. Joseph Drouhin are a family own Domaines and Negociant who command the greatest respect of all the big Burgundy houses. Their knowledge of the land combined with their attention to details in the vineyards as well as their gentle wine making style results in very fine Burgundy that reflect its origin. Little use of new oak, gentle extraction and whole bunch fermentation according to the year or the cuvee are whole part of their belief that good burgundy can't be made by firm hand of the winemaker. The crown jewels in the Drouhin portfolio are without doubt the Domaine Marquis de Laguiche, which has the largest percentage of land in Le Montrachet (30%) of all the owners, and the Domaine Drouhin-owned Clos des Mouches. Drouhin have had exclusive control over the former estate, from cultivation to distribution, since 1947, while Clos des Mouches is one of those rare breeds in Burgundy, a monopole. Originally planted with Pinot Noir, almost half the vineyard was replanted with Chardonnay in 1921 by Maurice Drouhin.
Le Montrachet is the most famous and sought-after Grand Cru white Burgundy, the title of which the villages of Chassagne and Puligny use as a suffix to their names. The vineyard spans 8 ha accross both the Puligny and Chassagne communes. Its poor limestone soils and south east-exposure, which ensures the vines are sunblanched from sunrise to sunset, result in ripe, full-bodied and often unforgettable wines. A true Le Montrachet has a depth of flavour and an almost haunting length unmatched by any other Grand Cru. It is a sophisticated wine of many layers that should be savoured and appreciated slowly.
The principal exponents of Le Montrachet are Joseph Drouhin, Remoissenet, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Bouchard Père et Fils, Comtes Lafon, Prieur, Sauzet, Leflaive, Ramonet, Colin, and Amiot-Bonfils. The largest parcels belong to the Marquis de Laguiche, whose wine is made by Joseph Drouhin, and Baron Thénard, whose wine is made by Remoissenet.
