Founded by pioneering Napa growers Joe and Alice Heitz in 1961, the estate is now run by daughter Kathleen Heitz-Myers and is in finer fettle than ever before. Joe and Alice helped Heitz grow into cult status and along the way championed the cause of Cabernet grown in the Napa valley. Its flagship has always been the Martha's vineyard, the first vintage of which was 1966. They are truely the old world of the New World. Aswell as producing wine from this exemplary plot of vines Heitz also make the fine Bella Oaks and Trailside single vineyard cuvees in addition to a Cabernet blend from the Rutherford part of Napa, aswell as some excellent Chardonnay and Zinfandel. Top quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is used which is vinified in steel tanks, aged in large wood barrels for a year, followed by two and a half years in oak barriques. The wine is grown and made in the vineyard and whilst the family employ some of the most up to date technology there is, including satellite-based tracking of each individual vine, this only serves to enhance what nature gives them. Far from being concocted "trophy" wines, these, above all, are designed to be highly drinkable and to give great pleasure. They are classic Napa Cabernets of great pedigree and sophistication.
Arguably Americas most important wine growing region, home to the likes of Dominus, Heitz, Cain Cellars and Opus One. Bordeaux varietals are key in this 40 mile long North-South valley that stretches from the San Fransico Bay up towards Calistoga and the sheer variety of different climats and vineyard sites is as bewildering as the sheer variety of styles of wine produced. At their best these can be some of the most opulent examples of Cabernet Sauvignon in the world - truly great wines with dinstinctly long cellaring potentials, but more youthful approachability than their european counterparts.
