The first vintage of this was 2011 and the Altares may regret ever making this, it’s so good they did not, and will not, get away with it being a one-off. The wine gives as much pleasure as it gave the Altare family pain to make. This is a selection of the top grapes within the Arborina vineyard - destalked berry by berry, hence the wine's name "Uno per Uno," meaning each berry was picked "One by One." This method avoids crushing and keeps berries intact giving great finesse to the tannins and precision to the fruit. Four barrels were made, less than 100 cases. Compared to the Barolo Arborina, this is more velvety and textured, very different in profile. Smooth caressing and sensual with great complexity. Notes of dried fruit, cherries, forest berries and blueberries. Silky, floral with very pretty fruit character and a savoury sappy, saline and spice touch.
Elio has done Piedmont wines a great service over the last two decades. Not only has the outstanding quality of his delightful ‘La Morra’ Barolo wines raised Piedmont’s profile, but he has taken many younger growers, such as Marco Marengo, under his wing giving them advice and instilling confi dence in them to make and bottle their own wines. Elio’s production of modern style Burgundy-influenced Barolos is, alas, miniature, meaning many of the Cru Barolos sell out before they even reach our list. Always experimenting and looking to perfect his art, Elio makes some stunning wine outside of his strong Barolo portfolio, including the old vines single vineyard Larigi Barbera and the Barbera Nebbiolo blend, La Villa. As Elio steps ever closer to full retirement, his talented daughter Silvia is taking greater control of wine production. Their flagship wine, Barolo, undergoes a short fermentation of up to a week, followed by ageing in used oak barriques for 2 years, the same method applies to the Cru Barolos apart from are aged in anything up to 30% new oak. The langhe wines are all aged for a shorter time, 12-6 months, in 100% new oak. Despite these modern methods oak or alcohol are not at all the feature of these wines you'de expect. Rather they are packed with vivid character, offer silky textures and are some of the most intense wines Piedmont has to offer.
Barolo is greatest, most intense and expressive display of the Northern Italian grape variety Nebbiolo. The name is given to bottles from the Piedmont area, made exclusively from Nebbiolo, and coming from the five core towns of Barolo, La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba, along with certain other peripherary villages. The wines offer power, aromatics and longevity that is almost unmatched elsewhere in Italy, perhaps the world. Top, forward thinking producers have pushed huge changes in the winemaking culture of the area, and as a result finer, purer Barolo is being produced than ever before.
