Brilliant precision and intensity. Superb balance of fruit, gripping but lush and velvety tannins and bright mineral notes. Grounded, full
but stylish flavours of ripe berries, currants, fruit liqueur, salt and stones. Glorious. From vines that face south 450 metres above sea level,
therefore ranking among some of the highest in Montalcino, Poggio Antico make refreshing pure and elegant Brunellos. The Riserva is only
produced in exceptional vintages. In those years the grapes from the oldest (planted in 1970) and lowest altitude vineyard are picked, crushed,
fermented and aged separately. Ageing is for three and a half years in wood; the first year of ageing takes place in 500-litre French tonneaux
while the remainder is in new Slavonian oak barrels. The wine is then bottle-aged for one and a half years before release to complete the
mandatory five years of total ageing.
The estate was originally purchased in 1984 by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder, from Milan, who had fallen in love with the wines of Montalcino and the unique beauty and geographical position of Poggio Antico. Located at an average altitude of approximately 450 metres above sea level, Poggio Antico, is one of the highest altitude estate's of Brunello. This highly privileged position and sunny vineyards facing south to southwest guarantee optimum growing conditions, and afford the grapes a great natural balance between sugar and acidity.Yields are kept intentionally, nearly half the amount stipulated by law for Brunello di Montalcino. Short pruning, de budding, green harvests and a pre harvest de-selection, not to mention a double sorting in the winery, all ensure that only concentrated, pristine grapes are used for their wines. A new cellar was built in 2002, old cylindrical vats were replaced by truncated cone-shaped stainless steel tanks which allow for a more gentle extraction. Depending on the Cuvee the wines are either aged in large Slavonian oak barrels and / or French 500-litre tonneaux. Intense pure and elegant Brunellos.
An important Tuscan DOCG known for the production of intensely powerful red wines made from the Brunello clone of Sangiovese which reaches levels of richness and structure not found elsewhere in Tuscany. The climate is arid and warm though cooled by a maritime breeze from the south west. The zone is essentialy split into two: a warmer southern region that producers earlier drinking, fuller wines, and the Northern, higher altitude zone on Galestro soils that produces more aromatic, finer examples, Pertimali being amongst them.
