Sassicaia, 2006

  Tenuta San Guido

"The 2006 Sassicaia may very well go down as one of the all-time great recent vintages for this Tuscan thoroughbred. The year started off very warm but by August evening temperatures had moderated, leaving the fruit with a stunning combination of ripeness, perfume, acidity and tannin. The wine is simply glorious, that's all there is to it. Layers of dark fruit meld into smoke, leather, violets, menthol, earthiness and tar as this profound wine opens up in the glass. The creamy, silky finish lasts an eternity, as waves of fruit caress the tannins with breathtaking elegance. Everything is in the right place in this magical Sassicaia. This is one for the ages. In a word: Awesome." Antonio Galloni

About Tenuta San Guido

Sassicaia needs little introduction. Five parcels of land, owned by the same family since 1800 and set five miles inland from the Tuscan coastine at altitudes ranging from 250 - 600 feet above sea level. Grown on stony soils, aged in 1/3 new french oak for twenty months, and a further six in bottle prior to release. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc. It is a simple equation, yet from it comes Italian vinous royalty. Time and again the sense of terroir present in Tenuta san Guido's Sassicaia is recognised and revered. Silky tannins and finesse are the hallmarks, and always the focus on elegance over power.
