2016 Domaine du Pegau

2016 Domaine du Pegau
When there's the scent of Da Capo in the air, it usually means a great Pegau vintage in the making. And so it is with 2016, for such is the hot streak of years the Rhône valley is on, this is the first ever time fastidious owner Laurence Feraud has decided to make back to back vintages of her famous Da Capo Cuvée after her compelling 2015.

Pegau are renowned for their wild, hearty, uncompromising style of traditional Châteanueuf-du-Pape. Ripe whole-bunches, low tech fermentations and long ageing in large wooden foudres make for some of the most characterful and powerful wines in the region. This wholesome style, aligned to the dry and sunny 2016 vintage that producers at harvest time called “magical” (Vieux Télégraphe) and “idyllic” (Beaucastel), has made for a formidable combination that Pegau’s throng of admirers will adore. A textbook vintage.

However, far less conventional but no less exciting is 2014, the latest release of which is the Cuvée Laurence. Against the grain of many, perhaps, we find that the cooler more challenging vintages are the ones where the magic of Pegau really comes alive. All of the heart and soul that is so quintessentially Pegau is at its measured best in the 2014 Cuvée Laurence. Here a typically natural, pure power is tempered by freshness and acidity. There is something both noble and alive about the Laurence. Saline, spicy red fruits offering both a juiciness and sweetness that make for soulful and moreish drop of wine. Pegau vintages like these may not be the ones that attract the critics’ highest scores, but they are the ones we value above all others.

Please note the Da Capo is made in small quantities and will need to be allocated. The wines are offered in bond and are currently abroad, shipping will be in Autumn 2019
