Boudignon is fast becoming a household name. Since his first vintage in 2009, and going full time in 2015, he has landed on practically every Michelin-star wine list in France and is now achieving widespread recognition for producing arguably the best Chenin Blancs in the Loire Valley today.

Rebecca Gibb MW of Vinous writes that “the purity of the wines of this former judo champion Thibaud Boudignon, is impeccable”, while Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate states that “he offers wines of purity, tension and finesse with virtually no rivals in Savennières”, adding that Thibaud is “one of France’s foremost vignerons and winemakers today".

The focus is on terroir, rather than grape variety, and by replanting 80% of the vines himself, with multiple massale selections, Boudignon’s Chenins are born to express a sense of place. By working with low yields, indigenous yeasts, and light lees ageing and without malolactic conversion, he achieves a recognisable thread of race, purity and finesse in all the wines. All together he now has a line-up of Chenins that offer a beautiful mix of expressive stone fruits, citrus and blossom, with a steely, bone-dry minerality – in varying degrees according to the cuvée.

This year sees our first allocation of ‘Franc de Pied’ 2021: a tiny parcel of un-grafted vines found in the stoniest section of the Clos de la Hutte vineyard. Aged in glass demijohns for 18 months, it is the absolute mineral expression of the Clos de la Hutte. As Thibaud puts it “I want fresh vitality in my wines and an almost brutal minerality”. Just 500 bottles were produced.

The headline cuvée this year is the Clos de la Hutte 2021 which has received 97 points from The Wine Advocate, but to miss out on the rest of the range would be to miss out on some of the best Chenin Blancs you can buy.
