A Bounty of Blaufrankisch
31 March 2021

Never one to rest on her laurels, the past year has been a productive one for restless Austrian producer Dorli Muhr. Plans to expand the winery and tasting room are well underway and a pivot to more direct sales at the beginning of the pandemic means that Dorli has had a more eventful year than most! Under her meticulous eye, quality here continues to soar as she refines and centres her focus on the native Blaufrankisch grape. The village of Prellenkirchen is located in the warm, dry region of Carnuntum, east of Vienna. Here the soils are primarily sandy, degenerated limestone and the Spitzerberg mountain (pictured) provides the source of some of the most elegant, light-touch reds one is ever likely to encounter. Now officially recognised as an Erste Lage, the highest classification in Austria, Dorli’s Ried Spitzerberg has become the flagship red of the region and in our mind the best in all of Austria. Additionally, Dorli bottles another two Spitzerberg sub-plots as single vineyard wines – Ried Roterd, the original vineyard of Dorli’s grandmother, and which produces a measured, supple expression of Blaufrankisch, and Ried Kobeln (Liebkind) – a drier plot which produces fuller, plusher wines. Furthermore, what began as an experiment with Syrah has become a bit of a hidden gem in her portfolio. Less so, perhaps, since Stephan Reinhardt described the 2017 as “the best I have ever tasted from Austria.”    Read More
