A brilliant release

It feels like only yesterday that Bollinger released their excellent La Grande Année 2008; the success of which saw us sell out in a matter of hours. Today’s release features the 2012 vintage – a natural successor that looks set to be just as popular, representing a hypothetical blend of the crisp precision of the ’08 alongside some of the ripeness and luminosity of the ’02. The hallmarks of greatness for the 2012 vintage are pretty well rubber stamped.

That said, the growing season in 2012, one we’ll hear a lot about in coming releases, wasn’t the easiest. A light frost in February was followed by a harder and more damaging frost in April. Adding to the woes of vignerons a period of rain and humidity through flowering brought constant mildew pressure. As a result of the first half of the year, yields were severely reduced. But as the old adage goes, “Août fait le moût”, and riding to the rescue in 2012 was what Guy de Rivoire, Bollinger’s Commercial director, called “Champagne’s miracle” – an August of heat and blazing sun that turbo charged the ripening curve of the diminutive crop before a cooler, and completely dry, September brought the season to a close.    Read More
