2007 might not have been Champagne’s easiest growing season, yet it was clearly a very good vintage at Bollinger. Indeed, after a couple of so-so performances in’ 04 and ‘05, the ’07 - ’12 releases from this Ay Grande Marque have been real head-turners. We were utterly charmed by ‘07 Grande Année on its debut back in 2016 and as a result we’ve been looking forward to seeing what an extra 60+ months sur lie would bring to the equation. The answer is quite a lot. This is a superb release, more elegant than your average R.D. (due, we are told, to the very high percentage of Verzenay Pinot Noir in the blend), but also full of complexity and energy. Bright, luminous, and full of detail, a burst of crisp chalk, fine grapefruit and pale orchard fruit notes are accented by a spice box of fragrant exoticism; cardamon seed, ginger, fresh nutmeg and saffron, all supported by a precise, delicate and inviting mousse.    Read More
