A JR Wine of the Week: JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett 2016
We have long extolled the virtues of Germany’s dancing Kabinett Rieslings. They are bright, fine and moreish with perky, mouth-watering acidity, delivered with a fresh fruit sweetness that renders them ineffably elegant and easy to drink. The Mosel Valley is home to the most graceful off-dry Rieslings in the world, and perhaps the greatest exponent of this style is the legendary Joh Jos Prum.

The Prum family is resolutely in favour of Rieslings with fresh acidities and varying degrees of residual sugar, believing the off-dry, medium and noble sweet Rieslings of the region to be the Mosel’s unique selling point. Katharina Prum continues her family’s ancient legacy of producing Rieslings of effortless precision, balance and class; preferring the laser-line rigours of stainless steel to the softer contours of wooden barrels. Low alcohols and a complex, slatey piquancy define the wines. In youth, these are vibrant, thrilling bottles of the upmost purity, which slake the thirst and energise the palate - perfect for a British heatwave. With age though, they resolve to become graceful, mineral beauties that retain their noble, fruity beginnings.
