For many years Jacques Thienpont farmed one tiny plot in Pomerol. With his one-hectare plot purchased in 1979, he created an icon, the ultimate garagiste wine, which has stood the test of time and fashions. Le Pin has swelled to an impressive 2.7 hectares over the years, however, the temptation to expand his empire beyond the heart of Pomerol was always resisted. That was until 2010, when Jacques was offered a superb plot in St Emilion, on the winding backroad between Troplong Mondot and Tertre Roteboeuf.
An immense labour of love, it is still considered a ‘work in progress’ from this most perfectionist of wine-makers. Detailed soil studies were undertaken to better understand the vineyards and draconian measures were taken – three hectares of vines were ripped out! Precision in the vineyards is matched by a meticulous approach in the winery. Recent vintages very much wear the Thienpont insignia and indeed nowadays when you go to taste Le Pin, you tend taste L’If alongside it. From 2017, Jacques has added a second wine called Collines de L’If, further dialling in the quality of the Grand Vin.
