A must-buy Claret
26 March 2020

If you’re going to buy just one wine from the legendary 2016 Bordeaux vintage, Grand Puy Lacoste would get our vote. Xavier Borie’s elegant home in the heart of Pauillac consistently produces magnificent wines, but on occasion, as with the 2016, the wines can reach an altogether different realm. Southwold results are closely guarded secrets, but we can reveal that the exquisite 2016 Grand Puy Lacoste was one of the stand-out wines of the Medoc. With the class and refinement of a First Growth, it offers beautifully detailed aromatics, swathes of plush, classy cassis at its core and an enduring finish laced with fruit, cocoa and mineral notes. It is the epitome of graceful claret: long and profound, yet distinguished, elegant, and with more than a passing resemblance to some classic wines from Chateau Lafite. 2016 is clearly a glorious vintage, which suits the style of GPL. We envisage this beauty being ready to drink in as little as three or four years’ time, such is its sense of balance and harmony; however, it possesses all the components required for laying down for thirty plus years.

“The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a superb, vibrant, tobacco-infused bouquet that soars from the glass; it is extremely well defined and classic, just as you expect from this Pauillac. The medium-bodied palate displays succulent tannin that hides the backbone supporting this wine. It is more approachable than the Grand Puy Lacoste of a decade ago, yet retains the essence of its terroir. This is one of the most elegant GPLs of recent years. 95/100”. – Neal Martin, Vinous Media, Jan 2019
