Pomerol produces so many regal wines. For many, the likes of Chateau Lafleur, Petrus, Le Pin, Vieux Chateau Certan, L’Eglise Clinet and Trotanoy represent the pinnacle of pleasure. But (and this is a fairly major but) they don’t come cheap. Finding a first-rate yet affordable Pomerol has been our holy grail, one we are pleased to report we have discovered.
Unlike the 2014 cuvee, which was a formality to blend, the 2015 required some effort. Three preposterously good barrels of the most ethereal and beautiful 2013 complicated matters. They were clearly of exceptional quality, and far too good to be discarded, but stylistically at odds with the muscularity and depth of the 2015s. After much trial and error, and with the usual helping hand of our supervisor and chief, Denis Durantou, we landed on something we are very proud of. It combines the natural richness, structure and sweetness of the wonderful 2015 harvest with the fragrance, purity and vibrancy of one of the finest cuvees never produced in 2013. It will make a perfect gift or serve this Christmas – although we think it’s so good, we drink it all year round!
