A True First-Growth

We are delighted today to release the new vintages from fabled Ribera del Duero estate Vega Sicilia. Prized for its consistency and first-growth level quality, no cellar is complete without Unico and Valbuena. Unico benefits from one of the longest aging periods (outside of Fortified Wines) of any wine in the world, at a staggering ten years between barrel and bottle before release. A selection of the finest vines encompassing nineteen different soil types across forty hectares, it is raised in a combination of French and American oak in a range of sizes. While intended to be approachable on release, there is no question that Unico 2011, like all great Unicos, will age gracefully and continue to improve for decades.

Valbuena 2016 is the product of a very fine, fresh vintage in Ribera, and seems a very compelling buy. Always released after five years, two spent in barrel and three in bottle, recent years have seen it reach new quality levels and, while drinkable younger, it is in many respects a baby-Unico well worthy of attention.
