Another exceptional "9"
11 February 2020

Before a bud had even burst there was palpable anticipation in Burgundy for the 2019 vintage. For Burgundian folklore dictates that vintages ending in “9” should be great. Well, 2019 is set to turn myth into reality. It looks to be a stunning year of explosive rich fruit, solid structure and bright acidity. We were therefore delighted to achieve the increasingly difficult task of securing a barrel of the Mazis-Chambertin, Cuvée Madeleine Collignon at the Vente du Vin des Hospices in November 2019. Our first purchase there for three years! We are even more thrilled that Louis-Michel Liger-Belair agreed to take care of the ageing and bottling for us.The wine boasts the intensity, ripeness and structure that characterise this vintage, allied to the charm and balance that is so typical of this Cuvée. Full but even-keeled flavours abound. A burst of spice-infused ripe, dark forest berry and kirsch fruit mix with Victoria plum notes that provide the wine with a juicy, sweet softness. Expansive, fleshy but with a steadying backbone. The tannins coat that palate and melt into the fruit seamlessly. Testament not only to the quality of the vintage, but also to the increasingly brilliant work of Ludivine Griveau and her team. This must surely rate as the Hospice’s greatest Mazis yet. The jewel in the Hospices crown, this magnificent plot was donated by Jean Collignon in 1976 and named in memory of his mother. The vines lie in the heart of the hillside on the same contours as its immediate neighbour, Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Old vines planted in 1947 account for nearly 60% of this blend, no doubt explaining the typically silken tannins this cuvée boasts year in, year out.
