This is the perfect wine for the last-minute.com-wine-lover. If you haven’t chosen what you’ll be drinking over the Christmas period, we have just the ticket. Straight from the cellars of Batailley in the heart of Pauillac, we have a parcel of the excellent 2007.
This maligned vintage took some unwarranted criticism early on in its evolution. This was not a year for Vins de Garde, rather, this was a year for charming, fruity, early drinkers; similar to the delicious 1997s. Now at the ripe old age of eight, the Batailley 2007 is just a joy to drink. There is still plenty of primary Pauillac fruit laced with some rustic gravelly and earthy notes. Juicy, plummy fruit dominates the pallet, with hints of wild strawberries and crème de mûre. The overall impression is of velvety fruit and sumptuous, finely textured tannins. It will happily accompany fowl, livestock, stilton, curry, and just about any other Christmas left-overs you might throw at it over the Festive period! If you hurry, we can probably get your order delivered in time for the 25th (subject to postcode).
‘Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. An impressive showing of Batailley, this is the best bottle that I have encountered. It is rather closed and introspective on the nose with touches of mulberry, wild strawberry and gravel. Fine definition, opening up all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry, fine tannins, lovely caressing texture, the Merlot counterbalancing the austere finish. This is very impressive. Tasted January 2011. 92/100’. – Neal Martin, erobertparker.com
