Beaucastel releases 2014 vintage
The year started off reminiscent of 2003. At Beaucastel, after a mild winter and warm start to the year, first bud-break was recorded on the 20th March – three weeks earlier than usual. Flowering was successful amid balmy temperatures. In June the mercury hit 40 degrees. Summer holidays were cancelled and harvest was planned for 18th August. However the weather turned in mid-summer, with two large rainstorms requiring Beaucastel’s vineyard team to act decisively. Green harvesting and de-leafing were the order of the day, to aid ripening and prevent the spread of disease. The weather improved for September, mother nature had given the exhausted vineyard team some respite. In the end harvest was not completed until 10th October.
The expertise and rigour of the Beaucastel team, together with an Indian summer, really made the vintage - the result being some very good wines. This is one of the more elegant, forward, refreshing and silky Châteauneuf vintages of recent years.
