Bodegas Tradicion Sherry – genre defining sherries
28 November 2017

Bodegas Tradicion’s range of sherries shoot unapologetically for the very highest reaches that Jerez can offer. From a fino with an astonishing average age of 12 years, aged just about as long as flor can survive, to a 30 year old Palo Cortado that is actually closer to 40 and an Oloroso that contains wines from the 1860s, these are simply breath-taking bottlings of age and great beauty.

Ironically, for an estate founded on long aged sherries, the history of the current estate is only 20 years old. When the historic old house of JM Riviero was sold in 1991, thereby ending an illustrious 300 year history, Joaquim Riviero began to formulate his plan for a new Bodega. This new project wouldn’t own vineyards. It would rely on his rich book of Jerez contacts and an unwavering commitment to producing some of the region’s most exciting, fully aged bottles. He had a clear style in mind and it centred on the ability to purchase and select the very finest old soleras they could lay their hands on. Joining forces with Jose Ignacio Domecq Fernández de Bobadilla, the former oenologist from Domecq ( a prodigious winemaker who also happens to be the son of Jose Ignacio ‘The Nose’ Domecq Gonzalez, one of the most famous oenologists of the golden age of sherry) the aim was to create genre defining examples of complex, very carefully aged, exquisitely balanced old sherries, a million miles away from the high production, minimally aged bottlings so often seen on supermarket shelves.
