Bordeaux 2016: Chateau Margaux and Pavillon Rouge
06 June 2017

Following the 2015 Margaux was always going to be a hard task, but the 2016 is more than up to the challenge. Is this the perfect expression of Margaux? It could just be. There is a nobility to the aromas, which speak of the purest Cabernet Sauvignon, an ethereal presence to the mid-palate fruit, and a haunting and unrelenting finish. This truly is a wine that combines power and finesse in equal measure. It is the very essence of Margaux.

The Grand Vin itself has clearly benefitted from a strict selection policy and the wonderful new wine-making facility designed by Sir Norman Foster. The other beneficiary is Pavillon Rouge. This wonderful second wine has always had a loyal following, but since the introduction of the third wine, the quality has leapt. The 2016 Pavillon Rouge represents just 28% of the total production and boasts the purity and elegance of a Grand Vin. It truly is a spellbinding wine that is of similar quality to vintages of Chateau Margaux twenty years ago.
