Bordeaux 2016: L’Eglise Clinet and Evangile

Bordeaux 2016: L’Eglise Clinet and Evangile
We’ve made no secret about our feelings for Pomerol. The plateau is capable of producing some of the most diverse and exquisite wines you’ll find anywhere in the world. One of the most reliable performers is Denis Durantou’s magnificent L’Eglise Clinet. Year after year, this wine delivers. Powerful and dense, yet ethereal and nuanced, the 2016 is a sensational effort, right out of the very top drawer. We also have limited quantities of Denis’ wonderful second wine, La Petite Eglise, which still represents one of the best value buys from this appellation.

Another standout Pomerol was Domaines Barons de Rothschild’s Evangile. Wonderfully situated next to Petrus and Vieux Chateau Certan, Evangile boasts an enviable terroir including one parcel on exceptional blue clay. The 2016 is a broad and muscular style, packed with glossy, dark Merlot fruit and encased in a formidable tannic structure. When Evangile gets it right, this chateau is capable of producing outstanding wines; the 2016 definitely falls into this category... A recent bottle of the 2005 showed its pure refinement and class – the 2016 certainly ranks alongside the 2005, 2009 and 2010, and may well surpass these vintages over time.
