Bordeaux 2019: Château Palmer
02 June 2020

Following the runaway success of Pontet Canet last week, the other major exponent of biodynamic farming in the Medoc, Chateau Palmer, has decided to join the early running. And like their contemporaries in Pauillac, they too have reduced their release price by 30%.

2019 was certainly a much easier vintage for biodynamic growers, without the early summer rains that caused so much mildew in 2016 and 2018. The chateau’s policy was to not send samples, so we have not tasted their 2019, although we have a pretty good idea what it would taste like... Palmer has an unmistakable style. Always decadent, complex and aromatic, with a sumptuous texture; it’s a unique style of Margaux, which is both profound and seductive. Rather unusually for this part of the Medoc, the vineyards are planted with a high proportion of fabulous old vine Merlot. One of the features of 2019 is the quality of this varietal – as evidenced from our tastings so far. Some commentators have already suggested that these are the best Merlots they’ve ever seen on the Left Bank.
