Bordeaux 2019: The Peloton
10 June 2020

The pace is relentless. If we continue at this speed, we’ll reach the finishing line well before the end of June. After a morning dominated by Lynch Bages, we have had another cluster of releases. First up is the mighty Chateau Pavie (£1495/6). Gerard Perse’s flagship St Emilion has been awarded a potentially perfect score from The Wine Advocate (97-100). Lisa Perrotti-Brown describes it as, “Quaking with latent power and shimmering with a kaleidoscope of electric flavors”.

Edouard and Christian Moueix have offered their stunning range of St Emilions and Pomerols. I tasted these in my garden on Sunday afternoon and was bowled over by the quality and style. These are very handsome wines. Look out for the sensational Clos de la Madeleine (£265/6), a tiny limestone site just above Belair. Belair Monange (£630/6) is at its radiant best. From their Pomerol holdings, Lafleur Gazin continues to offer good value at £310/12, whilst the jewels: Hosanna (£525/6) and La Fleur Petrus (£830/6) are decadent yet controlled – both beautiful expressions of their terroir.
