Bordeaux 2021: Château Léoville Barton, Château Langoa Barton & Château Angélus
23 May 2022

2021 marks the last vintage of Anthony Barton’s long and illustrious life at Château Langoa Barton. It is also the first vintage to be produced in the new state of the art winery. As ever, Léoville Barton will be one of the best buys of the vintage, representing true “super second” quality at a fraction of the price of its neighbours. William Kelley calls it a “terrific success”; we concur, this is a very seductive, refined Léoville Barton. Less introverted than normal, the 2021 is all grace, purity and glorious fruit, wrapped in the silkiest of tannins. The Langoa is equally compelling and looks rather striking with its 200th anniversary label. In our opinion, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better Claret for less than £30 per bottle.

Over in St Emilion, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal has released her exquisite 2021 Chateau Angélus. The latest vintage is perhaps the most cohesive and sophisticated example to date. We love the style. Detailed, layered and graceful, brimming with latent power, this has a real sense of exhilaration. William Kelley suggests he “wouldn't be surprised to see it upstage a number of more touted vintages once it's in bottle.
