Bordeaux 2022: Château Grand Puy Lacoste

30 May 2023

“a modern-day and less forbiddingly structured version of this estate's brilliant 1982” - WK

Wow! What a wine. Xavier Borie has turned the dials up to eleven on this monumental GPL. It is the most charming, sophisticated and downright delicious example we can ever remember tasting from barrel, and that’s saying something – there have been many memorable experiences. This is Soyeux with a capital S, a lavishly fruited, aromatically gorgeous, light-footed Grand Puy Lacoste, which ranked amongst our favourite wines of the vintage. For many in our group, this represents the epitome of great modern claret – the essence of pure and refined Pauillac. As William Kelley says, there’s a textural quality here that is reminiscent of 1982, with all the benefits of modern-day winemaking. We love it!

Alas, as with so many wines this year, yields are reduced, and we may have to allocate. Please bear with us.

“The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked from 7 to 23 September and contains more Merlot due to the high quality of the fruit, matured in 75% new oak. There is 14.2% alcohol. Therefore, this lends this GPL a little more precocity and sensuality compared to other vintages, not cut from the same "classical" cloth as, say, the 2019 or 2020. Underlying this velvety veneer are enticing traits of freshly-rolled tobacco and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. Silky smooth in texture, so much so that it belies that backbone underneath. There is a peacock's tail of mineral-rich, quite peppery black fruit on the finish, completing a Pauillac endowed with huge potential. 2030-2065. 96-98/100” – Neal Martin, vinous.com

“A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, the 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a brilliant classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, violets and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that exhibits beautiful structural refinement and purity of fruit. Classy and integrated, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day and less forbiddingly structured version of this estate's brilliant 1982. 95-97/100” – William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

We can also offer the brilliant Lacoste Borie 2022. This is a chip off the old block and represents terrific value for money. At a fraction over £20 per bottle (excluding taxes), this is a wine on which to go long.

For those interested, Xavier also offers both wines in a “Variation Case”, which includes a double magnum, two magnums and four bottles in a handsome bespoke case.
