The noise surrounding Burgundy is louder than ever before, as shown by the voracious demand for the newly-released 2020 vintage. If you are wondering what all the fuss is about or have been bitten by the Burgundy bug and want to start a collection, we recommend these four wines as a great way to kick things off. Representing a cross section of styles and quality levels, these are brilliantly-made wines of great personality that offer relative value for money in this bullish Burgundy market; they also include the critically acclaimed five-star wines - Pommard Clos Blanc and Groffier Bourgogne – as written up by Jasper Morris in www.insideburgundy.com

Bourgogne, Blanc, Terroir d’Exception, Chateau de Meursault, 2020
Proudly exhibiting its origins, this is all stones and minerals, combined with the alluring juiciness that is such a feature of this vintage – what a combination. Free flowing crushed stone and rocky salt character bristle through the Sicilian lemon and stone fruit, adding a nice bite and snap to the wine. A cracker. This hails from a plot of 40 year old vines between Albert Grivault's Clos des Perrieres and Perrieres itself. A Premier Cru site if ever you saw one but for the fact that it was a quarry up until 1977, which has meant that it was never classed as such.
Puligny-Montrachet, Les Nosroyes, Génot-Boulanger, 2020
Textbook, graceful, pin-point precision Puligny. Very beautiful, floral fruit on the nose, a hint of lemon blossom and Mirabelle. The palate is silky and fine, with a fresh bead of citrus fruit and savoury grip sewing the soft yellow fruits together. Amazingly refined and long for a villages. Exquisite. A very fine Puligny village vineyard towards the top of the slope on the north side of the village, just underneath Les Perrieres. Here there is a predominance of limestone. Les Nosroyes is a well-drained vineyard that typically yields finely etched but ripe fruited wines with a chalky finish.
Pommard Clos Blanc 1er Cru, Génot-Boulanger, 2020
Proof that Pommard can have style, as well as substance. Taut with crisp fruit and a chalky minerality, yet with the silkiest of hedgerow berry fruit gliding across a bed of savoury limestone notes. Clear-cut, super focused and intense. Not a hair out of place, beautifully toned and driven. Brilliant. This comes from the northern sliver of Clos Blanc, adjacent to Grands Epenots. Half the plot is on white calcaire de Nantou soils, the other half on redder soils, similar to Grands Epenots.
Bourgogne, Pinot Noir, Robert Groffier, 2020
A serious Bourgogne from one of the great young winemakers of the Côte de Nuits, Nicolas Groffier. This offers depth and structure, whilst retaining the vivacity and nerve that is the hallmark of Nicolas’ wines. Bright, crisp fruit notes of raspberry, bramble and cherry. Fresh, ripe and edgy. A Bourgogne to lay down for a few years. Two thirds of this comes from the Vougeot commune and one third Morey St Denis.
