Catch one of the last 2010 Barolo releases
25 October 2018

Our latest arrival is one of the very last of the great 2010 Barolo releases, the stunning Sarmassa Vigna Merenda from Scarzello. A traditionally-made Barolo, the Vigna Merenda is an exciting and rare bottling of Sarmassa that is from a monopole parcel within the top part of the vineyard, next to Cerequio. Federico Scarzello has breathed new life into this small, traditional estate since taking over from his father in the early 2000s. One of the first jobs was a programme of replanting the vineyards with the high-quality Nebbiolo Michet clone. The vines may be young , averaging just above twenty years old, but they are in good health and are planted densely to naturally lower yields. The wines are fermented long and slow – sometimes up to 55 days depending on the vintage and are then aged for around 30 months in large German and Slavonian oak casks, before a further three years ageing in bottle. Scarzello’s wines demand time and are released several years later than those of their peers. The wines are brimming with site specific character, charm, and power in equal measure. an exciting and rare bottling of Sarmassa. A domaine rapidly on the rise.
