Champagne that doesn’t cost the earth (literally)

Pascal Doquet is the president of the Association des Champagnes Biologique and a passionate campaigner for the need for sustainability in the region. His organic Champagnes are produced with immense respect for the environment as he is absolutely convinced that healthy soils produce better grapes. In a region where vineyards are often stripped bare, Pascal’s outposts of verdant vines resemble a scene out of Asterix, thriving soils holding out against the centurion hordes of herbicide and chemical treatments. They offer a stark reminder of how few in the region value soil health and biodiversity above out and out yield. And while they might not have the powers of a Getafix brew, they almost certainly taste an awful lot better!

Diapason is a case in point. A Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs that comes exclusively from the famed village of Mesnil, this particular bottling is a blend of the excellent 2008 and 2009 vintages. It is a wine of outstanding clarity, depth and vitality, offering up the steel of Mesnil, depth from two superb but opposing vintages and the complexity of a wine allowed to mature slowly for over seven years sur lie.    Read More
